Dark Phoenix Saga refers to a series of stories originally published in ten issues of Uncanny X-Men (#129-#138). After the real Jean Grey protected a space shuttle with her mental shield, she bargained for her life with the Phoenix Force entity and was cocooned in a lake. Unbeknownst to her fellow X-Men, she was replaced by a doppelgänger wearing a new green and gold costume. Part of Jean Grey's "essence" resided in this new being. When this character turns uncontrollably angry and violent the green parts of the costume turn red. This story continues to attract more attention than any other story, when it was originally published it appeared that the real Jean Grey died.
